RO-RO VESSELS

Ro-Ro ships have ramps and platforms capable of keeping any wheeled vehicle immobilized, from passenger cars to industrial vehicles or trucks loaded with merchandise for long-distance trips. There are also hybrid modes of road transport with passengers (ferries) and road transport with container ships (Ro-Lo). In any case, they are vessels specially designed so as not to damage either the means of transport or the goods that they can carry.There are different types of Ro-Ro ships, among which the ”Car Carriers” stand out, whose main differentiating characteristic is their square shape due to their sole function of transporting cars.

• It allows for a wider radius of action for trucks and trailers, so that ground transportation operators can also expand it. This means that a fully loaded truck can be loaded in turn, so that it continues its transport route once it reaches the port of destination.

This is so because the external doors are quite close to the water line and have a cover arranged for large
vehicles, without having watertight bulkheads. Wooden constructions or plates that form the compartments
of a ship, which can prevent large displacements of water inside.

Ro-Ro vs Container:
Containers regulated by ISO regulations are perfectly suitable for transporting a vehicle inside. However, it is not the type of merchandise for which its transport is designed. Containers are designed to transport goods inside, so a vehicle will not adapt to these containers in the same way. Ro-Ro cargo eliminates various costs derived from both loading and unloading and stowage of containers.

Types of Ro-Ro Vessels:
Ro-Ro vessels are used exclusively to transport cars and trucks across the oceans are known as Pure Car Carriers (PCC) and Pure Truck & Car Carriers (PCTC) respectively.
There are 3 types of these ships that take advantage of their ramps when facilitating, lightening, expediting the loading and unloading of goods transported, and depending on the type of goods:

• Car Carriers: Square shaped and only carry cars, trailers and commercial vehicles.

• Ro-Pax:are those ships that can transport road freight and passengers at the same time, that is, they are mixed, they also known as ferrys.

• Ro-lo: A hybrid Ro-Ro and container ship. These ships usually carry vehicles on the lower deck and on the upper deck stack containers.

Specifications of car carrier vessels:

Motor vehicle transport vessels (Pure Car Carriers or Pure Car and Truck Carriers) are a subcategory of (Ro-Ro)
 and are used for the mass transport of vehicles (several thousand) by the large car producing companies.

Its interior is divided into several decks, some of which can be raised to accommodate large vehicles.
The ship is loaded by ramps placed aft or on the side by the vehicles' own means
(cars, trucks, excavators, buses or tractors).

These mixed vessels are involved in both cargo and passenger transport, combining the carrying capacity of
 roll-on/roll-off vessels with modern ferry passenger facilities, which makes them very versatile and able
 to cover peaks of demand that usually occur several times a year in some passenger traffic. 
These ships normally have two or three decks accessed by fixed or mobile ramps, via wide aft doors.

Such vessels are those equipped with both the infrastructure of ro-ro vessels and container ships
that is to say ships which, because of their car storage decks, can store vehicles, and unload them at
 port entrances for tap-ro vessels, and at the same time due to its dowry of cranes, this ship is capable
 of providing container service, that is why its storage capacity is so complete while functional.
